14 April 2007Spring is here and at Kats&Kits we have forgotten the howling winds and driving rain of just a few weeks ago. The sun is out and the trees are bursting into leaf all along the lane. The cats are enjoying the longer days and the warm weather and are exploring their territory anew. Last week we had two new arrivals. They were picked up from an elderly lady's home after she was taken ill. She had been living as a recluse and the cats had been shut in with her for eight years. They are in a poor way, traumatised and very frightened. Just moving them has been a huge shock to them. We hope eventually they will start to respond and realise we are trying to help them. It is sad to see them with their heads buried in their blankets. Kats&Kits have at last found fame if not fortune. As a result of seeing an article about us in the Western Daily Press, we are to feature in the May and July editions of the Hungarian cat magazine, Cicc Macska magazine. Hungarian speaker needed!

With a constant stream of cats still coming to ours and every other rescue’s door, it makes you think about what happens between them being much wanted kittens and the poor unhappy animals that we see.
Cats are very vulnerable in this modern age. Veterinary science has become as hi-tech as medicine which means that those cats who are loved and cherished live much healthier lives than those of fifty years ago. They are vaccinated, treated for infections with antibiotics, have dental care and a whole host of sophisticated procedures. This however does not change the fact that life for them is hazardous, they are the last domestic animals to roam free, and in these days of busy roads just getting home can be a dangerous business. People lead busy lives and there is often no one at home during the day, which is why we always say that cats need access to their homes and to be kept in at night to keep them straying away too far. We encourage elderly people or people who live on their own to put a card by their phone to say they have a cat, and to give a contact number of someone who will care for it if they are ill.  This however does not account for all cats that we see. The main problem is the millions of cats who are still not neutered. From six months female cats can have three litters of kittens a year. Un-neutered tom cats will roam many miles after a female in season and also be very smelly at home. Please, if you have a new kitten this spring make arrangements with your vet to have it neutered by six months. There is financial help available and you will have a happy, contented and settled cat.What has all this to do with Teddy and Omo you ask? Well you can see by their pictures what beautiful cats they are. Teddy was amongst cats we were asked to catch, living around the rubbish skips at a food factory. He was in a very poor condition with a very thick matted coat that took many weeks to improve to become our chocolate-box cat.  He has a wonderful nature and loves his home with us. Where did he come from? We ask him, but he keeps his secrets to himselfWhiter that white Omo is equally handsome, the most affectionate cat I have ever met, if we had the time he would happily spend his day being carried around with his paws round your neck. It is hard to believe he did not belong to someone, but he was a stray with an injured leg and sore feet and had obviously been out for some time. No one has come forward for them or for many of the cats we care for. Yes, we have a vacancy for a Dr Dolittle
