Things to Consider Before Adopting a Cat

The following notes were compiled by Daphne, one of our helpers, in the early days of Kats&Kits to give prospective owners some idea of what is entailed when adopting a cat.

Location
Please consider carefully where you live. Cats and main roads don’t go well together.

Your lifestyle
Are you out at work all day? Your cat will need access to its home. Cats that are shut out all day usually find somewhere else to live especially in the winter. We also advise that they are kept in at night, as this is when accidents often happen. If you go away you will need a good cattery, or someone you trust, to care for your cat. Do you have other animals that your new cat will have to adapt to?

Children
Sometimes kittens and small children do not mix. It is difficult for them to understand how delicate they are and how easily hurt. If you have an older cat only choose one used to children.

Expenses
Vet bills, neutering, vaccination, worming and flea treatment.
Cattery fees, cat litter and of course food.

How to choose your cat
Would you like a family cat or cats? Kittens are usually homed in pairs unless there is another young cat in the house. It is very unkind to leave a kitten on its own without company. Perhaps you would like to give an older cat a good retirement home. What they will all need is quite a lot of your time and affection..

When you have chosen your cat
When you have chosen your cat your house and garden will be checked to see if it is suitable.

Your new cat will be nervous and unsure of its surroundings. Do not under any circumstances let the cat out for three weeks or until it is completely relaxed in the house. Cats often try to escape so take care with doors and windows.

Kittens are best kept to an area of their own with their bed, food, water and litter tray as they get lost very easily. This applies to older cats too especially when they are new to your house.

When you eventually let your cat out, do it at a quiet time and under supervision just for short periods.

We hope you will be very happy with your cat and it will be happy with you.

About Kats & Kits:

Kats & Kits is a long established cat sanctuary based in the depth of the UK's mystical Wiltshire countryside, on the edge of Salisbury Plain, near the white horses of Alton Barnes and Westbury.

Run by a small dedicated team we aim to provide a home to rescued cats where re-homing is not a viable option.

This blog documents the daily challenges the group has overcome since 1994 to provide care and shelter for abandonded, stray and unwanted cats.
