22 October 2006Here we have Ebony, grateful for the warm autumn nights for she was found all on her own in a car park. Approximately five weeks old and very hungry, was she lost, abandoned by her mother or dumped by humans? We will never know. Luckily Ebony was found by people who cared. Anxious that her mother might return they made her a shelter and bought special kitten formula from the vets to feed her. However after asking at every house and shop in the vicinity and waiting for many hours for the mother they became worried because the kitten was not feeding, so decided to seek some help. They took her to a local vet who suggested Kats&Kits and of course Lorraine took her in. Apart from being very hungry, she soon demolished a plate of kitten food, and needing several days treatment for fleas and lice she seems in reasonable health. Ebony is a friendly and happy kitten, which would suggest she has had some human contact, but where she came from will always be a mystery. Animal stories don’t always have a happy ending, but this one looks as if it might, if all goes well in a few weeks time she will go to her new home with the kind people who found her.
Three months have passed since the first posting on the Kats&Kits blog. We have gone from the very hot days of high summer to the last days of autumn. We are now appreciating every good day that we get and hoping that they continue for a while longer yet. Apart from a few isolated days of heavy rain, we have had wonderful warm sunny days with spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
The hedgerows and trees are full of fruit and berries which the birds will enjoy throughout the winter. I have been feeding the hedgehogs well, so that they will put on enough weight to see them through the winter, but I don’t think they will hibernate unless the weather gets colder. Seventeen degrees here today, three degrees higher than average for the time of year. 20 October 2006After several enquires; we thought you would like to know that Penny has settled well in her new home. 14 October 2006
The following notes were compiled by Daphne, one of our helpers, in the early days of Kats&Kits to give prospective owners some idea of what is entailed when adopting a cat.
Location Please consider carefully where you live. Cats and main roads don’t go well together. Your lifestyle Are you out at work all day? Your cat will need access to its home. Cats that are shut out all day usually find somewhere else to live especially in the winter. We also advise that they are kept in at night, as this is when accidents often happen. If you go away you will need a good cattery, or someone you trust, to care for your cat. Do you have other animals that your new cat will have to adapt to? Children Sometimes kittens and small children do not mix. It is difficult for them to understand how delicate they are and how easily hurt. If you have an older cat only choose one used to children. Expenses Vet bills, neutering, vaccination, worming and flea treatment. Cattery fees, cat litter and of course food. How to choose your cat Would you like a family cat or cats? Kittens are usually homed in pairs unless there is another young cat in the house. It is very unkind to leave a kitten on its own without company. Perhaps you would like to give an older cat a good retirement home. What they will all need is quite a lot of your time and affection.. When you have chosen your cat When you have chosen your cat your house and garden will be checked to see if it is suitable. Your new cat will be nervous and unsure of its surroundings. Do not under any circumstances let the cat out for three weeks or until it is completely relaxed in the house. Cats often try to escape so take care with doors and windows. Kittens are best kept to an area of their own with their bed, food, water and litter tray as they get lost very easily. This applies to older cats too especially when they are new to your house. When you eventually let your cat out, do it at a quiet time and under supervision just for short periods. We hope you will be very happy with your cat and it will be happy with you. 06 October 2006Basil came in to Lorraine’s care in the very early days of Kats&Kits. His leg had become infected after a bite which resulted in him having to have it amputated. His owners felt they could not cope with a three legged cat so straight after the operation he came to Lorraine to be nursed. He was very young and learned to cope in a very short time. What a wonderful cat he has proved to be, loved by us all, friendly and affectionate with humans and felines alike, quick to occupy any available lap, a very good excuse to take a double coffee break. |
About Kats & Kits:Kats & Kits is a long established cat sanctuary based in the depth of the UK's mystical Wiltshire countryside, on the edge of Salisbury Plain, near the white horses of Alton Barnes and Westbury. Run by a small dedicated team we aim to provide a home to rescued cats where re-homing is not a viable option. This blog documents the daily challenges the group has overcome since 1994 to provide care and shelter for abandonded, stray and unwanted cats.
